Arsenal extend Champions League qualification record

English football club Arsenal last night extended their record to 16 consecutive seasons of qualifying for the knockout stage of Europe’s elite football competition, the Champions League. Olivier Giroud’s first hat-trick for the Gunners and notable performances from Joel Campbell, Mesut Ozil and Mertesacker for the London football club ensured a 3-0 victory over Greek side Olympiakos.

Despite a faltering start to this seasons Champions League campaign, Arsene Wenger managed to orchestrate a great escape as Arsenal needed to win by two goals in order to qualify for the last 16 knockout phase. After a turbulent opening 20 minutes, Wenger’s tactics aginst Olympiakos’ trademark counter attacking football paid off as his charges remained patient and composed drawing the opposition out and allowing Ozil to play his deadly passes to the Arsenal attack.

Arsenal now face the prospect of playing Real Madrid, Barcelona, Wolfsburg, Atletico Madrid or Zenit St Petersburg as they finished second in their qualifying group.
