El Chapo recaptured six months after prison break

Mexico’s notorious drug kingpin, Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman has been recaptured in Los Mochis, Sinaloa, after a heavy exchange of fire with Mexican military and police. Guzman who came up under the Sinaloa Cartel, was arrested together with his henchman/bodyguard, “El Cholo” Ivan. Five of his security personnel were killed during the raid as Mexican authorities teamed up with the U.S Drug Enforcement Agency (D.E.A). It is still unclear whether Guzman will be extradited to the United States where he faces several charges most notably in Chicago where he was declared enemy “number one”.

El Chapo broke out of jail on July 11 just as applications for his extradition to the United States were being processed. Guzman famously escaped via an underground tunnel and had been on the run since with a $5 million bounty for information leading to his arrest.

Unfortunately, El Chapo seems to be a victim of his own success as Mexican authorities revealed that it was his ambition to dabble in the movie business that led to his capture. The Mexican drug kingpin had been in touch with Hollywood actor Sean Penn since October 2015 in order to conduct interviews for a future “El Chapo” movie.
