At a rally cum UPND party card renewal exercise in Mongu attended by Mr Hakainde Hichilema and other senior UPND officials, HH called upon Zambian President Edgar Lungu to not panic or fear arrest once he leaves state house as President.
Addressing thousands that attended the event Hichilema said, “Don’t fear that Hakainde will arrest me and take me to Lilayi police, to Chimbokaila, to Mukobeko like I did to him, no, get it from me Lungu I will not have time to arrest you…I will be very busy ensuring that our country’s laws are followed to the letter by all”.
Edgar Lungu is positioning himself to run for a third term in office in the 2021 Zambian General Election but is set to face strong legal challenges from opposition parties who claim the move is unconstitutional.
Lungu took over after the death of the then president Michael Sata in 2015 and was then re-elected in 2016 running a very heated contest with Hichilema who still claims he won the election. It remains unclear how the law will be interpreted in this case.
