Luanshya Council presents awards to residents
…as LCM scoops best ratepayer award

LUANSHYA Municipal Council has launched the first-ever District Local Government Awards which saw five winners walk away with different honours.
This was during the commemoration of the 2017 African Day of Decentralisation and Local Development which falls on August 10, every year.
This year’s theme, Equal opportunities, social economic empowerment and youth participation in local governance and local development in Africa seeks to promote greater participation of the residents in governance and social economic development issues.
Luanshya mayor Nathan Chanda said the council was determined to use the awards to motivate residents to show commitment to developing the town through payments of rates and ensuring that property owners keep their surrounding clean. He said that the awards also aim at seeing to it that public institutions compete for better service provision to residents.
The 2017 Luanshya Local Government award winners are:
• The best institutional rate payer , Luanshya Copper Mines
• The best residential rate payer, Mrs Lucy Mwale of House No. 25 Section 27 Mpatamatu township
• The best looked after residential property award, House Number 57 Lantana Avenue, New Town, Luanshya belonging to Mr Everisto Mwenya.
• The best performing school award , Rivercross Primary School
• The best performing clinic, section 26 clinic of mpatamatu township.

Officiating during the award presentation ceremony, Luanshya Mayor Nathan Chanda commended local government award winners for showing innovation, forward thinking and creativity in promoting development and improved service delivery. The Luanshya mayor said that this is just the beginning of goods things and next year it will be even bigger and better and called on the private sector to come on board and partner with local authority.

The annual local government awards ceremony was in line with the goals of the revised national decentralization policy which among others seek to mordernise local government through consistent and effective service provision to residents. The awards presentation ceremony was attended by Luanshya District Commissioner Joel Chibuye, thr deputy mayor Eng.Mulenga The TC mrs Silungwe, Ward Councillors, WDCs representatives , heads of government/private departments and other dignitaries.
Head of Public Relations and Business Development at Luanshya Copper Mines Sydney Chileya received the award on behalf of the mining company during the colourful ceremony.
