Dr. Mehdi K. Mazheri, is one of the foremost surgeons in the United States to formulate and evolve the revolutionary procedure that is known as LASIK surgery, which is flapless. LASIK or Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis is commonly referred to as laser eye surgery or laser vision correction. It is a type of refractive surgery for the correction of myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. Dr. Mezhri has been interwoven with surgery since a young age and at the age of 24, was instrumental in the development of a research article on the effects of Aminocaproic Acid on epithelial healing. A few years later, at age 27 Mazheri began work on a pending patent which deals with flap complications and severe dry eye. After years of relentless practise and mastery, in 2005, Dr. Mazaheri transitioned to perform all his refractive surgeries without cutting the flap. Dr. Mazaheri who keenly studied the eye and how it heals, soon realised that the post op medications (topical steroids) should be adjusted based on microns of tissue removal.
In an interview Dr. Mazaheri says,” I thoroughly enjoy the art of surgery as it is not just fulfilling a dire requirement on the patients end but is also helping me learn the subtle nuances of the human physiology”. Dr. Mazaheri’s highly advanced proposals and strategies aided him in devising a post-op course that was exclusive to the norm of affixed short course post-surgery that was otherwise a significant limitation to this procedure. Dr. Mazaheri realised, that a very strict tapered, and closely monitored topical steroid administered post-surgery would significantly reduce haze formation, and thus created the Mazaheri post-op table.
Dr. Mazaheri also started practising hyperopic PRK which was known as a challenging procedure. Over the next few years, Mazaheri realised that the first two nights of post-surgery protocol makes a huge difference in terms of discomfort and haze formation.
