Russell Simmons the Music Mogul and co-founder of iconic music label Def Jam has stepped down from his roles as CEO from the companies he founded after new allegations of sexual assault came to light following Jenny Lumet’s revelations of her encounter with Simmons circa 1991.
Lumet is an accomplished screenwriter most notably known for Rachel Getting Married and also the daughter of Hollywood legend Sidney Lumet. In a column that appeared in The Hollywood Reporter, Lumet recalls an encounter she had with Russell Simmons which included sexual penetration aginst her will.
“Maybe another person would have thought differently, or not made the trade. It was dark, but not pitch dark. You closed the door. At that point, I simply did what I was told. There was penetration. At one point you were only semi-erect and appeared frustrated. Angry? I remember being afraid that you would deem that my fault and become violent. I did not know if you were angry, but I was afraid that you were.” – Lumet
In a statement released by Simmons, the music mogul claims not to remember events unfolding the way they have been narrated by Lumet and says he only steps down in order not to provide any distractions for his businesses. Last week, Simmons was under the spotlight for claims made by a model that she had been sexually assaulted by the Def Jam founder when she was 17. Simmons claims the sexual encounter in question was consensual.
